Student Spotlight: Kaley Young, Purdue University Calumet
Surprised by Seelio- The Difference A Semester Can Make
We know there are lot of choices out there for sharing your professional story. At Seelio, our goal is to make sure that it’s as easy as possible to take the things you’re experiencing in and out of school and connect them to whatever it is that you want to do next.
A lot of students first encounter Seelio in one of their classes, and we know that with papers, projects, exams, and all of the other things that come with school that it can take awhile to get comfortable with something new. That’s where our service team comes in. They’re always at the ready to help students and faculty get started and have a great experience on Seelio.
One day, David, one of our educational service leads struck up a conversation with a student at one of his partner schools to see how things were going. We loved hearing her story and wanted to share it with you in case you just learned about Seelio in one of your classes and you’re wondering what it’s all about.
Without further ado, meet Kaley Young, a recent graduate from Purdue University Calumet who studied Management Information Systems and encountered Seelio in her Honors Capstone course.
What did you think about Seelio when you first heard about it?
I’ll start by saying that I am no fan of LinkedIn. When I had to create a Seelio, I was expecting much the same experience. I’ll let you know, however, I was pleasantly surprised with Seelio! In fact, it is now my Seelio link I share on my resume, not my LinkedIn.
What was your favorite part of building your Seelio portfolio?
My favorite part of building my Seelio portfolio is incorporating the actual projects I worked on. Unlike LinkedIn, Seelio provides a FAR better outlet for visually showing what you’ve created. Saying what you did and actually showing the results are two very different animals — and when you have both, it’s magic! Additionally, Seelio is very user-friendly, allowing for personable touches that really allow you to get to know the user as a person as well as a professional.
Did building your Seelio help you be more prepared for pursuing internships or full-time jobs? If so, how?
Absolutely. Seelio allowed me to think of all the projects I’ve worked on and ultimately transform them into useful experiences that make me competitive in the job hunt.
Have you shared your Seelio with an employer?
I share my Seelio link on all my resumes. I have a job interview in a few days, and I know I will be referencing it. We will see what the outcome is!
Whether I get the job or proceed to grad school, I know I will be updating my Seelio. I want to grow and improve my skills, and Seelio is an excellent way to document that growth.
Would you recommend that other students use Seelio? Why or why not?
Yes! The visual aspect of Seelio is so wonderful to showcase all the hard work that a student puts into their college career. If a student uses Seelio from the time they are a freshman to the time they are a senior, it will be an excellent example of their growth throughout the years.
We’re excited to see that since our interview Kaley is now a Master of Library and Information Science candidate at UBC. Congrats, Kaley, and thanks for sharing your experience with us! If you haven’t already, be sure to check out how she captured her Purdue Calumet experience and give her some feedback on the great work that she’s added.
