It’s Back to School Time and We’re on a Mission to Create The World’s Most Prepared Students

It’s that time of year, it’s back to school time. As a new group of students start their college careers and others come back for a new semester, we thought it was a good time to talk about a topic that comes up quite a bit in higher education: the skills gap, or the gap between the skills students have and the skills employers want.

This summer at Seelio we’ve been hard at work developing new ways to help our partners create the world’s most prepared students. As we work on new features, we’ve been consolidating research to better understand the skills gap. We have made it our mission to help bridge this gap and help students communicate and connect their valuable learning experiences to the 21st century skills that employers want.

We compiled some of our research into an infographic that presents the general approach of students’ journey to a job and some of the odds they face in this rapidly evolving global marketplace. Let’s take a look:

Journey to a Job

In light of this debate, how can higher education leaders help reassure students, and their families, that their programs will provide them with the educational experiences necessary to help them succeed in today’s society? As well as produce graduates who are better prepared to respond to the demands of today’s global marketplace?

Our perspective is that students have many of the tools they need to succeed, but they simply need a way to map how their education relates to real-world skills. We think that there’s room to create a bridge between higher education and industry so that students can show how their valuable in and out of class learning experiences have prepared them to succeed.

EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF PORTFOLIOS THROUGH RESEARCH

Can the experiences, stories, and artifacts that students share in portfolios be an influencer for prospective students’ enrollment decisions?

Many of us are already aware that portfolios can be hugely beneficial to the student learning process. In fact, a growing body of research validates the impact that intentional portfolio programs can have on student engagement, learning outcomes, and reflection.

But can portfolios impact a student’s decision to stick with their course of study, or a prospective student’s decision to enroll in a course of study?
