Educator Spotlight: Integrative Portfolios for Social Change

Integrative Portfolios of Social Change with Dr. Katie Richards-Schuster

We asked our educational partner, Dr. Katie Richards-Schuster, to share how the University of Michigan’s Community Action and Social Change minor is using integrative portfolios for social change. See what she had to say about how portfolios are being used in a capstone course to help students:

1) Think critically about community engagement in the classroom and the community;
2) Articulate their passions and commitments for social justice work;
3) Position themselves for social justice and social change in the real world.

BRINGING SENIOR ENGINEERING PROJECTS ONLINE: MICHIGAN ENGINEERING TESTIMONIAL

Earlier this spring we worked with the Multidisciplinary Design Program (MDP) at the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering to bring senior engineering projects from their annual Design Expo online.

The Design Expo is a day-long showcase of senior engineering projects that gives the community a chance to see what Michigan Engineers have been working on. MDP was looking for an easy way to showcase student projects online and highlight the company sponsors that make the Expo a success.

We asked Shawn Salata, MDP Student Program Specialist and all-around Design Expo guru, to share her feedback on using Seelio for the Spring 2013 Expo.

WHAT PROBLEM WERE YOU FACING THAT SEELIO SOLVED?

We were looking for the best way to capture and showcase the senior engineering projects on display at the College Design Expo. In recent years, we have captured a quick 60-90 second video from each project (and there are 70-120 projects at each Expo), then uploaded them individually to our Facebook page. This was time-consuming and ineffective. With so many videos, the audience had to scroll through many postings to get to a project they might be looking for; or they may only look at the most recently posted videos, never even seeing 90% of the projects.

HOW HAS SEELIO IMPROVED YOUR ABILITY TO HELP STUDENTS LEARN FROM AND DOCUMENT THEIR EXPERIENCES?

Learning Portfolios: Perspectives from Associate Dean, Dr. Lynn Wooten

We count ourselves as pretty lucky to get to learn from the best at the University of Michigan.

Just the other week, we invited Dr. Lynn Wooten, the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs at University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, to kick off our Seelio team retreat with her perspective on learning portfolios.

She has been integrating portfolios into coursework at the Ross School of Business for the past few years as a way to help students take knowledge from tacit (something they learn in the classroom) to explicit (something they can apply in real life).

In Dr. Wooten’s curriculum, learning portfolios enable students to create a professional, digital identity where they develop:
