Updates to Your Seelio Portfolio

Welcome to Your New Portfolio

This week, we’re introducing our first update to the Seelio profile since the beta release! We’re also making some updates to the Add-Work process. Stay tuned for more about that in the next few weeks.

The changes you’ll see in the profile originated from the great ideas you’ve shared with us on User Voice, in design feedback sessions, and in a variety of surveys. We couldn’t have done it without you and are excited to share the designs we’ve been working on for the last few months.

Update! See our top 13 tips for maximizing your profile on Seelio below.

General Changes:

  • More customization – Our goal for this redesign was to provide you with added customization within a professional space. We understand that you see your portfolio as a home for more than just your works, but also a place to tell your story. Now you can show more of your personality through cover photos and different ways of arranging and highlighting your works.

  • Better / quicker snapshot of who you are – You told us that you wanted to be able to provide a quick visual snapshot of who you are and what you can do all in one place. In our design, we’ve arranged the profile so that viewers can see a quick summary of who you are on the left, with an overview of your works on the right. We’ve also made it easier to feature and rearrange your works so your profile looks exactly how you want it to look.

New Profile Tips

New Features:

  1. Skills – An optional list of 5 skills is now displayed on the left side of the profile. While career interests give viewers a good idea of your aspirations and goals, we have found that skills provide a good summary of what you are currently capable of.

  2. Relevant Classes – We have added the ability for you to list relevant courses as a way of supporting your skills and work experiences. We find that listing important upper-level and advanced classes gives recruiters a good idea of your background and familiarity with certain aspects of their industry.

  3. More options in displaying social networks – We had the ability to link to Twitter and your website before, but now we’ve added Linkedin, Quora, WordPress, Vimeo, Youtube, Google +, Facebook, and Github as well. Your peers and potential employers can now access all the pieces of your professional presence in one place.

  4. Availability Status – In addition to indicating that you are for hire, you can now specify the type of job you are searching for. Options include full-time, part-time, internship, temporary work and contract work, which will be displayed when a recruiter mouses over a check mark next to your name. Soon, we will be allowing employers on our platform search users by their availability. Stay tuned for updates!

  5. Cover Photos – You can now add an extra touch of personality to your Seelio with cover photos. These photos can be uploaded, grabbed from Facebook, or chosen from our library of custom stock photos. If you’d like your photography or designs to be credited and added to the Seelio stock photo library, feel free to email us at design@seelio.com.

  6. View As Function – You can now preview your portfolio as it appears to the public.

New Profile Tips

Features We’ve Improved:

  1. Enhanced Way to Rearrange and Feature Works – We’ve built a whole new structure for featuring works on your profile. After you have three works, you will be able to click the “Rearrange & Feature Works” bar and use the star icon and the drag and drop function to highlight certain works or move them to different places on your profile.

  2. Work Experience/Leadership Experience/Awards/Personal Interests – Recruiters love these sections because they provide an easy and quick overview of what you have done so far. In recognizing the importance of these features, we’ve reformatted the input fields so that they are easier to use and read. There is now a specific place for your role, organization, and the dates during which you completed your experience.

  3. Upload Resume – Not only have we made it much easier to upload your resume, but we’ve made the resume more accessible to viewers. The resume is now displayed on the front page to everyone – not just recruiters – and can be viewed and downloaded. Be sure to remove any personal information– like your address– before you post it!

What We’ve Removed:

  • Additional Photos – We’ve removed the ability to add additional personal photos to your Seelio. Although they did add an element of character, they did not provide as much value as we had hoped. As a means of preserving your current pictures, we’ve transferred all previously uploaded images to the “About Me” page into a Private Draft, which can be found under the “Drafts” section of Works in your profile.

We hope you like what you see here! If you have questions or feedback about the new profile, please contact us at students@seelio.com.

Student Spotlight: How Nathan is using Seelio in his job search

Nathan Ritter

The other week we got an email from Seelion student Nathan Ritter with the subject line “Employer Feedback on my Portfolio”. Inside was this quote from an employer who reviewed Nathan’s Seelio:

“You have by far the most useful and well laid-out portfolio among all the responses we’ve received, and we’ve received a lot…”

We were thrilled and couldn’t wait to talk more with Nathan– a recent graduate from Northwestern Engineering’s Segal Design Institute–  about how he has been using Seelio in his job search. Read more about his experience and see his advice below.
